Cold start problem :(

Post by tanov »

Hi all,
I have a problem starting with cold engine. When I start the engine
I have to wait about 5-10minutes. In other case it doesn't work
steady and the mixture is very rich. There is a black smoke.

maybe you got some more specs for us..

What sort of AX do you have?

I have:
AX 1.1
Year: 92
Monopoint injection
Bosch ECU, but I don't know the version

Thanks for your answer!
Is it the right place for this?

can't be better

it could also be the rubber leaderships "snakes" :?: of the vacum on the left side and on the back side of the injection unit

I thought that the problem is in the temperature sensor, but I did
some tests with constant resistors and the situation was the same.
I noticed the good activity of the stepper motor, so it works.

When it's cold and I start the engine it works at low idle speed.
After 10 minutes the idle speed rises sharply. It's the same with
constant resistor instead of temperature sensor. So there is
other sensor or something else....maybe the ECU that changes
the idle speed.

WTF zijn lijderschaps slangen??

Snakes --> tubes/hoses neem ik aan, maar van leaderships kan ik al helemaal niets maken :-)

did you check out the gas valve resistor?
this seems to be a common problem with ax...
first find out if the current between pins 1 and 5 is around 5v
(turn off ignition, pull out multi ehm thing, turn ign. on)
if thats ok put back multy thing
try to measure between pins 1 and 2(while the multything is in) if you move gas valve you should see the readings fluently go up and down, try the same with pins 1 and 4 (btw pin 3 is missing, start counting right to left)

5 4 2 1
- - - -

between pin 1 and 2 with gasvalve closed around 1V
between pin 1 and 2 " " open around 4,5V
1 4 closed 0V
" " 1 4 open around 4V

good luck!

You mean a throttle position sensor (potentiometer)?
I think it is OK, because it is renewed before an year. (about $300  )

But is it the right voltage on idle? Now the voltage is 0.7V.
The person who made the settings didn't know the right values.
In the Autodata program the idle voltage is 1V.
What is the right? What is your?

How about your lambda sensor. The thing in your exhaust which measures the O2. Normaly this thing measures the rich mixture and the ecu reagulates the mixture back to lambda 1.

yep the potentio meter i meant..
got a carb myself ....
so cant measure mine but values ar proximinations..
so 0,7 sounds quite alright
about the lambda sensor....
the fact that the problem only starts when the engine is becoming heated makes a point checkin the lambda sensor, it could give a higher voltage >1V
this would explain why the ecu gives more fuel...."thinks" its a lean mixture so ads some fuel?
sounds like a probable explenation to me...

btw please tell if and how your problem is solved

I know that the lambda is old and it's lazy. But works.

the black smoke would most likely not be an injection problem but more likely a problem with your engine (oil leakage).
if this is the case there is a possibility the head gasket is leaking?
open radiator run engine and look for bubbles.

but if the problem is in the block itself bad pistons=compression, I would seriously think about a new block or car.

Oil gives blue smoke. Maybe you could force the ecu into emergence mode by removing the wire of the lambda The engine manangement light on your dash should light up. Then there's a whole different injection behavior. If the problem still occurs changes are your engine itself has died.

I tried to disconnect the lambda, but the result was the same.
And my lamp didn't flash. I think the lamp is disconnected by
the seller

My oil and water are stable. There are no leaks and level changes.

try to disconnect the trottle position sensor this will surely get it into emergency mode

might just be a broken lamp....

do jou have to refill the oil frequently?

my BX liked it a lot! and gave nice black(blue?) smoke when I started her

Never the less it drove fine.
only quite thirsty in gas and oil

No,
The engine is perfect. The oil level doesn't change in 10 000km period.

And for throttle potentiometer. I think that the engine can't work
without this sensor  The fuel mixture depends on it
This ECU is not a super computer

mine worked fine with the sensor disconnected but I also heard of engines that didn't work without the sensor connected.

And what?
The ECU sends maximum of fuel, because it doesn' t know the
gass pedal position. So the lambda sensor determines the fuel
mixture? And you don't need a throttle potentiometer for $300?

No the manangement detects there something wrong, and follows its pre programmend mixture settings. Which are most of the time a bit rich. Sometimes the engine stalls but there are also cases that the engine works fine. If the engine keeps turning and the smoke's gone, then it's your engine manangement.

An easier solution is to drive it to a dealer they can hook your car up to a computer en see if there's something wrong with the injection system.
